- form criticism: the classification of the form or structure of biblical traditions on the basis of mood, form, and setting.
- source criticism: focuses on identifying the earlier written sources of which the present text is comprised, and, if possible, discerning the date and original historical context of each composition.
- postmodern: a form of interpretation that is suspicious or distrusts single explanations of texts that claim rational grounding and objective truth.
- generic (or genre) criticism: a complex interpretative exercise that seeks to understand the nature, meaning, and significance of a text by creatively comparing it with similar texts and/or traditions.
