Appendix: References to idolatrous practices in the Hebrew Bible.
The phrase “every green tree” is a euphemism for idolatrous practice, it being a common practice to set up pagan temples under green trees. A complete list of verses containing the phrase "green tree" and similar phrases condemning idolatrous practice follows:
Deuteronomy 12:2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:
